Rustic room divider

The owners of a rental appartment in France were having some difficulties on accomplishing the layout of their appartment. After some thought, I’ve come up with a stylish, yet very functional room divider.

Rustic room divider, made of reclaimed wood

Reclaimed wood

The divider has been made of reclaimed wooden beams that were used for the original rooftop of the owner’s French farm. One can see and feel the age! Very heavy wood, of approximately 200 years old. Although partly affected by bugs, they were perfectly usable for this kind of structure. After thorough anti bug treatment of course. But nothing is wrong with seeing some natural ‘defects’, on the contrary. It adds up to the character of the apartment, which is rustic and vintage.

The nature and form of the beams themselves are also rustic, vintage, and challenging to work with. None of them are straight. Everything is warped and uneven. But by carefully selecting the pieces, and giving the whole structure some tender loving care, the result is an eye catching element inside the apartment.

Form follows function

Apart from a dividing function between the living area and the sleeping area, this rustic room divider also serves other purposes: inside the apartment there is little room for closets and storage. I’ve managed to naturally integrate these functions into the room divider.

There is a dedicated wardrobe space, consisting of an (also reclaimed) iron chain that can easily hold up to 10 coat hangers. Once you hang your clothes on them, they also act as a means of further enhancing the dividing function of the room divider: clothes are blocking the view into the sleeping area, resulting in a greater privacy experience.

Underneath the wardrobe space, I have installed a total of 6 old wooden crates, further enhancing the dividing function of the structure. These crates also act as storage space. Whether for clothes, facing the sleeping area, or personal stuff and belongings, facing the living area.

Passage way

By using this rustic room divider with an open structure, a passage way is created between the living and sleeping areas. This prevents the use of a door and a solid wall. Nevertheless it gives the sensation of having a private, separate bedroom. This then results in a light, but also cosy environment, and in a more wide open space.
